America relies on its military to protect and defend our democracy as well as our homeland. Those who have served in any military branch may be eligible for full Military Honors at the time of burial. It is a way to recognize, commemorate and honor those who have defended our country. It serves as AmericaÕs Final Salute to a fallen solider.
If so requested by the family, Hurley Funeral Home will assist in arranging Military Funeral Honors for eligible veterans, as required by law.
What Is Included in a Military Funeral?
No fewer than two members of the Armed Forces will comprise an Honor Guard Detail, which will provide, at a minimum, a ceremony including the folding and presentation of the American flag to the next of kin. Taps will be played by a bugler, if one is available, or by electronic recording.
Eligibility
This ceremony is available to active and retired members of the military, to members and former members of the Selected Reserves, veterans of any war and other veterans who served at least one term of enlistment and separated under honorable conditions. Veterans discharged under dishonorable conditions or veterans with certain criminal records are ineligible. If you have questions, please call Hurley Funeral Home at 830.570.5995. Clarification also is available on the World Wide Web at: www.militaryfuneralhonors.osd.mil.
National Cemetery Burials
Service members and veterans are eligible to be buried in a Veterans Administration national cemetery. Their spouses and minor children also may apply to be buried there, as may adult disabled children.
The VA does not charge for the grave site, but the family pays for the opening and closing of the grave. A headstone, including the inscription, also is provided without charge by the VA. National Cemeteries are located throughout Texas and the United States, including one recently opened in the Dallas - Ft. Worth area. We can assist you with this information at Hurley Funeral Home.
